I just wanted to thank you for your visit recently. As you know, life has been proving very difficult for my sister and I. Having the support from the Carer’s Service, and especially from yourself, has made a massive difference to our future outlook, and on our wellbeing. Your professionalism, and empathy were very reassuring. Your time, consideration and offers of positive help are very much appreciated.

I have already met with Christine at the Natural Therapy Rooms – a lovely lady whom I am sure will be of great assistance in helping me relax!!

My sister and I have also booked on the visit to Bury Market, and are looking forward to the trip immensely.

It is so good to know there is someone there to listen, and offer support when needed. Your insight into our situation was invaluable in helping me realise that I am not an island, and that you, and the Carer’s Service are there for me.

The record below shows an end of course evaluation for the confidence building course and how the carer has moved from feeling quite low to feeling more empowered.

I just wanted to say a big thank you for the Coronation Street Tour trip you arranged for Carers. I took my brother Stephen has he is a great help in our caring role looking after our Dad.

From the minute I told Stephen about the trip he had been looking forward to going. He is a big Corrie fan and if it’s possible he is an even bigger fan now. He thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Meeting other Carers as well as visiting his favourite Street. He continues living the dream by telling every who he sees all about his trip and showing them his photo’s. It was a fantastic day and has been a huge success in bringing Stephen out of his shell.

 

What DIDN’T we do in London?

Well here goes: – Stopped for lunch at Stratford – upon – Avon on the way down. Visited Shakespeare’s house ( he wasn’t in ), enjoyed looking round plus the shops.
Saturday morning first stop Harrods ( always welcome ) then off to Trafalgar Square to see and say hello to Lord Nelson. Had lunch then on to the London Eye, would recommend it, then a 4D experience.
A river cruise next which took us miles ending at the O2 Arena which we had never seen then an Emirates Cable Car ride over the river. My how high did we go …..great – another FIRST for us. Two underground stations and one bus ride to guess where…? YES back to Harrods.
Too tired for anything else….Bed…ZZZzzzZZZ
Early start Sunday and off to Warner Brothers Studio Tour London “The Making of Harry Potter” what a fabulous sight and experience all organised by Kulsum and her right hand helper Carol. What would we have done without this wonderful pair?.
Where did the weekend go – I’m sure Kulsum Ordered the weather, like her the Sun Shone all the time.

Case Study 1  – Life After Caring

Attending life after caring was very daunting as I feel very uncomfortable in a room with lots of people but I was reassured prior to the course that the numbers would be limited and that there would be someone there to meet me.

The course gave me time and space to explore my feelings regarding my loss and also a chance to look forward.

I was challenged gently about some of my fears and how I might overcome them.

I have faced some of those fears in small steps for example I can now go on a coach trip with a friend which I would not do prior to the course.

I feel more confident and hopeful for the future.

Case Study 2 – Life after Caring

The Life after caring course helped my personal development by allowing me to assess my feelings after my Mother passed away in September 2013.

Having been a fulltime carer since 1994 you can become isolated from mainstream society; life appears to pass you by during the years of caring.

I needed something to help me to rebuild my self-confidence and help me to believe in my own abilities.

The Life after Caring course has allowed me to reawaken my intellectual and creative abilities that had been dormant during my caring role. The course was a real boost to my self-confidence and self-esteem and my enthusiasm for life came back.

Leaving a caring role and returning to a normal life brings many complex problems.

Having a course that can make sense of the way your life has changed can be of enormous benefit.

Part of the course concentrated on developing new coping strategies around stress and grief and although it was not a bereavement course it still helped me with my feelings of loss..

Information and networking were also methods that were used effectively to help me to normalise my life after leaving my caring role.

The course encouraged me to move forward and try to explore new opportunities and I now volunteer for the Carers Service in various roles. Giving something back to society by helping others also improved my self-worth. In volunteering I have explored new skills and seen my own abilities flourish and in helping others there is a positive impact on my own self confidence.

The life after caring course is a real bridge for vulnerable former carers who need help to reconnect with the rest of society and to re-establish as a person in their own right.
