Bringing carers and the carers service together as expert partners to ensure carers needs, wishes and feelings are at the heart of everything we do

Support with Cared for – via Crossroads

Carers respite programme organised through Blackburn with Darwen Carers Service and provided by Crossroads Care East Lancashire.

This programme provides an introduction to respite by providing a service that is flexible and available for a range of situations. Through consultation with beneficiaries, carers and the cared for we have found that families often receive support only when they have reached a crisis point. This situation puts great pressure on the carer and means they suffer unacceptable pressure, often for an extended period. This programme will provide early intervention and prioritises low-level support that can be increased, in order to empower the carers. The project addresses these kinds of needs in peoples homes, promotes independence and assists carers with caring.

Carers are involved in developing care plans and play an integral part in making decisions about the persons care and support. This involvement ensures that carers are partners in care and assists the programme deliver a better quality of life for both the carer and the cared for.

The National Carers Strategy has stated that carers are supported to maintain a life of their own alongside their caring responsibilities. It is keen to improve early identification of carers so that they can be supported in considering their various options and make informed choices. It reflects a shift in emphasis from structures and processes towards priorities centred around improving outcomes for people with care needs and their carers. The number one priority for the majority of carers is respite.

Therefore, through the Carers Service, Crossroads can provide:

The Carers Service contracts Crossroads to provide up to 16 hours respite for carers with intensive caring roles.

This support can provide carers with the opportunity of much needed respite and a break away from their caring role.

The offer:

  1. The hours requested can be utilised based on the needs of the carer, for example, the carer may wish for Crossroads to attend:
